During the year 2007 the Senior Center Building Committee completed the Design Development phase of the project and focused on the production of construction documents and completion of the bid process. Multiple meetings were held to coordinate with Department Heads to include Fire, Police, Water, Municipal Light, Building Services, Health and IT. Meetings were also held with the Town Engineer, the Recreation Commission, the Zoning Board and the Planning Board. We thank Nancy Forbes for her able assistance with the Landscaping Plan.
The committee spent considerable time reviewing the Cost Estimate as well as drafts and final copies of the Plans, Specifications and Bid Documents. We were aided in our work by our Project Manager, and our LEED Commissioning Agent as well as specialists used in the Town on telephone and security issues.
Bob Clarke of Catlin and Associates coordinated the printing and distribution of the bid documents and made the necessary arrangements for the bid opening sessions. We were fortunate to received 85 bids from Filed Sub Bidders in 18 categories. We received 18 bids from General Contractors. The three lowest bidders were very close to one another and the low bidder was determined after analyzing their bids on the five alternates. Groom Construction was the low bidder and his bid was compete and in order. He also received very favorable references and was offered and accepted the contract.
The Committee is happy to report that next year will be the year of construction for our project and are looking forward to the opening of the new center.
We welcomed Susan Burgess back to the committee and are grateful that she has again taken on the work of Secretary. We thank Pat Brusch for her very valuable work on the committee and wish her well in the many other roles she fulfills in service to the Town. We also acknowledge and extend our deep appreciation for all of the work done for us by Nava Niv-Vogel, Director of the Council on Aging.
