PURECOAT PLANNING COMMITTEE
The Purecoat Planning Committee had a very successful 2005 in fulfilling its charge from the Selectmen. The Committee held a public meeting in May to solicit ideas for potential redevelopment of the Purecoat site on the corner of Brighton and Hittinger Streets, and then we presented those ideas to the Selectmen in June. The neighbors around the facility, and other Belmont citizens, were open to a variety of development alternatives that could be accomplished through a rezoning that could make it financially attractive for Purecoat to sell its business. The report to the Selectmen in June also detailed our findings about environmental conditions at the site, and suggested that the Town conduct additional environmental testing around the perimeter of the property. The report also proposed that the Town hire an
environmental compliance officer to monitor this and other clean-ups around Town. The officer could also help to implement the Committee's proposal for a hazardous materials bylaw or regulation that would require companies to disclose their inventory of hazardous materials. At the meeting with the Selectmen in June, the Selectmen extended the charge for the committee for another year.
In the fall of 2005, Committee members continued work on real estate alternatives for the site and worked with the Selectmen on a plan for further environmental testing, if necessary. Members also contacted the Board of Health to continue discussions on a hazardous materials regulation.
Early in 2005, Committee Members met with the MA Department of Environmental Protection to discuss environmental conditions at the site, and in May 2005, the Department required Purecoat to conduct further testing of its property. That testing occurred over the summer, and the results were released by Purecoat in November. All of Purecoat's environmental reports are available near the reference desk in the library.
