BIKEWAY PLANNING COMMITTEE
The Belmont Bikeway Planning Committee did not hold any committee meetings during 2005. Its members have offered input on bicycle-related issues to the Traffic Advisory Committee and to the committee working on the redesign of the Trapelo Road/Belmont Street corridor. The Committee has expanded its attention to the concept of community pathways, which with the necessary funding, will accommodate not only bicycles but also joggers, strollers and the whole range of uses that can enhance the quality of life in the Town.
In May the Bikeway Committee, in conjunction with the Belmont Friends of Community Paths, supported an effort by a City Year work group to clean up and improve the portion of the existing trail from Brighton Street in Belmont to Alewife Station in Cambridge. Approximately 200 local residents and young adults and their parents who arrived in buses from Boston spent a good part of a day spreading stone dust surfacing material, raking out ruts, cutting overhanging brush and picking up rubbish. This trail continues to be widely used by walkers, joggers and bicyclists throughout the year.
