In compliance with Federal Regulations the Town of Belmont established a Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) in 2003. The LEPC is the local body that handles emergency planning and community right-to-know reporting on hazardous and toxic chemicals. The LEPC is comprised of Town Departments, industry representatives and community members.
During 2004, Hazardous Material First Responder Awareness Level training was conducted for various Town employees as part of the Committee’s Start-Up Certification. Plans are being undertaken to continue with training various Town employees in Hazardous Material First Responder Operations Level. This is a requisite for the Committee’s Provisional status.
The Committee conducted a “tabletop” exercise of a Hazardous Material Incident Response, which involved Joint Public Safety Communications, The Belmont Fire Department, Purecoat North, and the Metro Fire Haz Mat Team. The exercise was deemed a success by all involved.
Through the efforts of Mr. Leo Saidnawey, the institution of a neighborhood Notification System will take place for the residences in the Purecoat North area. This system will consist of an automatic telephone notification system, which will automatically call the residents in that area when they need to be notified of an incident involving Purecoat North. Enrollment efforts are forthcoming, and the system should be up and running very soon.
I would like to thank the members of the Committee for their work and input during the past year. I would like to additionally thank Mr. Robert Gad III for his involvement as the recording secretary for the Committee.
Respectfully submitted
Angus Davison, Asst. Fire Chief
