The Belmont Cemetery on Grove Street was opened when the Town was incorporated in 1859 and has been an important part of the community’s identity. The Town cemetery is a vital tradition for many Belmont families, spanning several generations. It is a place to memorialize loved ones as well as a place to seek solace. Over the past decades, the cemetery has also turned into a place for walkers and bird watchers. The impending opening of the Town’s new cemetery “Highland Meadow” on Concord Avenue represents significant challenges to the administration, maintenance and services provided by the Cemetery Division.
The Cemetery Division continues to work within the Department of Public Works plan during 2004. With four full time employees and one part time employee, the Cemetery Division provided support for various public works efforts when requested.
The administration of the Belmont Cemetery is strongly governed by the obligations created by M.G.L. Chapter 114. It is equally weighted by the expectations of those who have purchased perpetual care. The cemetery staff strives to maintain the grounds and provide a feeling of peace and tranquility consistent with the image presented at the time of plot purchase. We continue to offer our Annual Planting operation for lot owners who wish to memorialize their loved ones by having flowers planted on individual graves once each year before Memorial Day. We also offer a Memorial Tree Planting Program where people may select a tree (either existing or new) for a one-time fee to honor their deceased relative/friend.
The Cemetery Division performs all services related directly to interments, both casket and cremated remains. Activities include planning, providing a canopy if requested, digging the grave, preparing and executing the burial, clearing and refurbishing the site. The staff deals with the grieving families before, during and after the burial.
