The members of the Education Scholarship Committee are Leslie Aitken, Paula Caruso, Michael Gavin, Ex-Officio Tobey Brown, and Management Liaison Daniela Boccia
The Belmont Education Scholarship Committee was established under MGL 60 §3C by the April 1995 Town Meeting. The Education Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to residents of Belmont who are pursuing higher education. Awards are based on the applicants’ financial need, academic achievement, community involvement and school activities. The Committee also makes an annual award to the Belmont Public Schools. Funding is provided by Belmont Taxpayer’s contributions to the voluntary Education and Scholarship check-offs on Belmont’s real estate, personal property and motor vehicle excise tax bills.
The 2004 Town of Belmont Scholars are: Meaghan Beatty, Liliya Benderskaya, Ryan Beré, Alexandra E. Connelly, Jessica M. Dell’Orfano, Raisa N. Dukas, Ryan M. Harper, Min-Jee Huang, Keith Ho Ma, Peter D. Marquis, Shauna T. Penta, Bo Tao, Francisco A. Villarroel, Steven R. Warner and Robert M. Williams.
During FY04, $7,474.04 was contributed to the Education Fund and $2,321.87 to the Scholarship Fund through the voluntary check off. In addition, the Education Scholarship Committee received a bequest from the late Barbara Jack to the Belmont Scholarship fund in the amount of $153,000.The income from this gift is to be distributed to deserving students planning to continue their education at a four year college or university.
