In May, the Belmont Bikeway Planning Committee joined with the Friends of Belmont Community Paths to request a permit from the MBTA to widen and repair the Belmont portion of the Alewife Path near White Hen Pantry at Brighton Street. The permit was obtained, and over thirty persons showed up to cut brush, remove trash and re-grade this greatly improved community path.
In the fall, the Committee wrote a letter to the Selectmen requesting that the Town support the inclusion by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority of a pedestrian tunnel under the MBTA tracks at Alexander Avenue as part of MWRA's construction of a new proposed 4 foot diameter water main through the Town. The Committee and the Selectmen supported the underpass as a measure to mitigate the impacts on the Town of the anticipated two years of construction of the pipeline. As of the writing of this report, this proposal was still being considered by the MWRA. The underpass has been the subject of discussion within the Town for about 20 years, and has been envisioned as part of the proposed route of the bikeway through the Town.
Respectfully submitted,
Bob Livermore, Co-Chairman
