The Belmont Education Scholarship Committee was established under MGL 60 s.3C by the April 1995 Town Meeting. The Education Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to residents of Belmont who are pursuing higher education. All students are evaluated for their academic achievement, community involvement, school activities, and financial need. Funding is provided by Belmont taxpayers’ contributions to the voluntary tax-deductible check-off on Belmont's real estate, personal property and motor vehicle excise tax bills.
In 2002 Paula Caruso and Michael Gavin were newly appointed to the Committee by the Selectmen.
During FY02 $8,321.31 was contributed to the Education Fund and $3,424.23 to the Scholarship Fund. $5,000 was transferred from the Education Fund to fund technology needs in the Belmont Public Schools. In June 2002 the Scholarship and Finnick Funds granted 16 scholarships totaling $3450 and presented the Helen Savage Finnick $50 book award to a deserving underclass student. An award funded by retired Treasurer Ernie Fay was presented to a graduating senior pursuing a business career.
Any funds not disbursed in a given year are held over and invested for use in subsequent years.
Respectfully submitted,
Education Scholarship Committee
