The Town Moderator appointed the High School Athletic Facilities Building Committee in December of 2000. The Committee’s charge was to develop final design plans and construction costs with proposed renovations for the High School Athletic Complex.
Geller Sports, an architectural firm, was hired to develop final plans and bidding specifications. The renovations included construction of a polyurethane-based 400-meter track oval at the existing site with a multi-sport varsity field using synthetic turf as well as the installation of field and track lighting, and ADA-compliant spectator stands.
An appropriation of $2.2 million was approved at a Special Town Meeting held on April 25, 2001 and voters approved debt exclusion on May 22, 2001.
Construction started in June 2001 and was completed during 2002, for the multi-sport athletic field, track, spectator stands, and field and track lighting. A few punch list items remain and will be completed in the spring of 2003. Commemorative bricks have been sold and will be part of a patio with benches located adjacent to the commemorative brick walkway.
The renovated facility has received high marks from student athletes, coaches, athletic officials and the community at large. It was heavily used by boys and girls soccer, field hockey, and football teams at all levels. The versatility of the multi-sport athletic field using synthetic turf was displayed on several occasions with student athletes playing during and immediately after stormy weather. The 2002 fall season was the first opportunity for student athletes to play home games under the lights. During the new year, the track will be lighted for community use.
The committee filed for a variance from the handicapped accessibility requirements for a press box due to lack of space for a ramp and the high cost of an elevator. The Massachusetts Architectural Access Board denied its request. The committee has appealed the decision. Pre-trial motions are pending.
A small group of neighbors contested the issuance of a special permit to install field and track lighting. In March, the Middlesex Superior Court issued a decision in favor of the Town. This decision was appealed to the Appeals Court and disposition of this case is pending. Attorney Robert E. McLaughlin is acting as co-counsel with Town Counsel on this issue.
The Building Committee notes with sadness the death of Clyde W. Myerhoefer, Director of Athletics. Clyde was a true friend and advisor to the Committee, giving generously of his time and expertise. The community will miss his dedicated service.
Respectfully submitted,
William D. Webster, Chair
