Letter from the Selectmen to Town Meeting Members
April 15, 2003
Dear Town Meeting Members:
This year, as is the case in the last few years, we have scheduled a Special Town Meeting within the Annual Town Meeting. The special meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, is designed to address current year issues or things that should not wait until the new fiscal year commences in July.
Due to the significant uncertainty surrounding the budget with the state aid issue, we have decided to divide the Town Meeting into two phases. The first phase, commencing on April 28, will involve non-financial articles and the Special Town Meeting. It is expected that this phase will take place on Monday, April 28, Wednesday, April 30, and Monday, May 5. If necessary, we have reserved the evening of Wednesday, May 7. The second phase, involving budgetary matters will be delayed until Monday, June 16. We have reserved the evenings of Tuesday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 18 to complete this phase. A special booklet including the reports of the Warrant Committee and the Capital Budget Committee will be submitted to you at least one week in advance of June 16.
This year, we have developed a more comprehensive Town Meeting section on the Town’s web page. Included on this page will be the Warrant, the proposed motion for each of the warrant articles and information that relates to the articles under consideration. Since it is our intent to post new information and notices to the site throughout the Town Meeting season, you are strongly encouraged to subscribe to the site. By subscribing, you will receive an e-mail each time a new document or notice is posted to the site. Please visit http://www.town.belmont.ma.us/subscriber.shtml to subscribe. The mail list is called Belmont Town Meeting.
You are also encouraged to attend the Warrant Discussion Evening, a program sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Warrant Committee designed to educate Town Meeting Members on aspects of articles in the Warrants. This year’s program is scheduled for Thursday evening, April 24, 2003 at 7:30 PM in the Jordan Athletic Center of the Belmont Hill School on Prospect Street.
We look forward to a productive and respectful debate at this year’s Town Meeting.
Sincerely,
William N. Brownsberger, Chair
Anne Marie S. Mahoney
