The Department of Public Works / Water Division is responsible for the distribution of potable water to all properties in Town, all water is purchased from the MWRA. The Water Division maintains the water distribution system, performs all routine and emergency repairs, manages a substantial Water Main Replacement Program and Water Meter Modernization Program. The Water Division is operated as an Enterprise Fund to support services; all functions are funded by user fees not property taxes.

The Water Division is governed by a three-member appointed Water Advisory Board who serve three year terms. Daily operational routines are detailed to the Water Superintendent and staff.

American Water Resources will soon send a letter to Belmont residents, informing them of a service line maintenance responsibility. The mailing will explain that: (i) normal wear and tear can cause water line leaks or breaks, (ii) property owners are responsible for making the necessary repairs, and (iii) repairs can cost thousands of dollars. AWR's Water Line Protection Program provides property owners with an optional means to protect themselves affordably from the expense and aggravation of water line repairs.
Please be assured that this letter explains that our programs are offered by AWR and that we are independent of Belmont and the local utility.

In case Belmont property owners have questions, we've included a list of key information below:
  • American Water Resources is a subsidiary of American Water, the largest publicly traded water company in the country which has served homeowners for over 126 years
  • Servicing nearly one million customer contracts nationwide
  • We have an A+ rating and are a Better Business Bureau accredited business
  • AWR will only use licensed, Belmont area contractors for all repairs
  • We have been selected by the New York City Water Board as their official service line protection provider
  • 93% of our customers are very satisfied with the overall value of our program
In addition, Belmont Water Division can educate property owners of their service line responsibilities.

Recently many Belmont residents have received a letter from HomeServe USA Repair Management Corp. indicating that they are not covered by Water Service Line Coverage from HomeServe.

HomeServe is a legitimate company and is sending letters out to residents in the Boston area to offer an “insurance policy” in case of a water service line failure.  The Water Division repairs all water service line failures from the water main to the property line at no cost to the property owner.  The property owners however, are responsible for any repairs to their service line if the event of a service line failure.  The Water Division currently offers service line repairs at a minimal cost to the property owner if a service line failure occurs.  These repairs are for residential properties only.  Any repairs to commercial property water services are the sole responsibility of the property owner.  The Water Division upon request will provide a list of approved water line repair contractors.   If you have any questions regarding these letters please call the Water Division at 617-993-2700.
