TRAFFIC ADVISORY COMMITTEE
APPOINTING AUTHORITY: Board of Selectmen
LEGAL BASIS: By vote of the Board of Selectmen pursuant to Town of Belmont General By-Laws, Article 4.8.4
GENERAL: The Committee is committed to improving all aspects of pedestrian, vehicular and bicycle safety within the Town.
COMPOSITION: The Committee shall consist of no more than 11 members. Terms are 3 years.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Committee shall advise the Board of Selectmen on options available for issues relating to all aspects of traffic management and pedestrian, vehicular and bicycle safety, including but not limited to developing long-term traffic strategies. The Committee will interface with citizens, community groups, as well as Town, regional and state committees or officials.
ACTIVITIES: The Committee meets on a regular basis in conjunction with the Town Engineer and a representative of the Belmont Police Department to discuss and develop recommendations to the Board of Selectmen. These tasks include but are not limited to:
- Develop long-term traffic strategies
- Review and finalize roadway/intersection reconstruction
projects utilizing professional traffic consultants for the
interest of enhancing pedestrian, vehicular and bicycle
safety
- Evaluate specific roadways/intersections to recommend
improvements
- Recommend signage for pedestrian, vehicular and bicycle
safety enhancement
- Hear citizen concerns and submit recommendations to the
Board of Selectmen
- Conduct public hearings with regard to construction projects
- The Chair and/or an appointed Committee representative to
attend meetings with regional officials relevant to traffic
concerns within the Town of Belmont
- Encourage and facilitate public education concerning
transportation safety issues
- Consider proven solutions from other communities in
achieving the goals of Belmont's traffic strategy
