Fire Station Consolidation Charge
Charge to the Fire Station Consolidation Committee

Background:
The Fire Station Consolidation Committee was established by the Board of Selectmen as an advisory body to consider the consolidation and location of fire stations in the community. It is a temporary committee.

Composition:
The Committee is comprised of six (6) members. It was the intent of the Board of Selectmen to appoint three (3) members with some professional or technical expertise in public safety and three (3) members at large. It is expected that the Fire Chief and the Assistant Fire Chief will be essential resources to the Committee and will participate in Committee meetings and activities, when requested by the Committee to do so.

Responsibilities:
It shall be the responsibility of the Committee to consider and make recommendations to the Board of Selectmen on the proposal to consolidate the Town's fire stations. In connection with the Committee's responsibility, it is expected that they shall complete the following tasks:

  • Become familiar with the current research and practice in the field of fire station planning and design.
  • Thoroughly review and critique the analysis of the Fire Chief with respect to the need for station consolidation and the adequacy of proposed location(s). Develop alternative solutions or locations of land if necessary.
  • Document the condition and potential for reuse/disposition of the Town's current fire station facilities.
  • Evaluate the feasibility of combining other municipal building needs in connection with the construction of a new fire station.
  • Identify areas of analysis where professional, independent consulting services would be necessary to supplement the Committee's work.
  • Serve as a conduit to elicit and receive public input.
  • Prepare a formal, written report documenting the Committee's findings and recommendations timely for consideration at the 2001 Annual Town Meeting. Make presentations on the Committee's report at Selectmen's meetings and at other appropriate public forums.
