Welcome to the Waverley Square Fire Station Reuse Planning Study information page. Thank you for taking the time to read about the project. We look forward to your comments.
The Waverley Square Fire Station was built in 1873 as the Daniel Butler School. The building was later converted to a fire station in 1926, though it was only supposed to be temporary until a new location was found. An addition was constructed in 1933 to accommodate a branch library and in the 1980's the Belmont Food Pantry opened in the basement. Many engineering studies found the floor of the garage not to be structurally sound and recommended closing the fire station. The 2003 Town Meeting agreed to move the Fire personnel and equipment to a temporary station at the Town Yards until a new Waverley Square Fire Station is constructed. The disposition of this building is still undecided - the purposed of this Planning Study.
